Frequently Asked Questions

How much tariff do Chinese goods pay entering the US in 2026?

There is no reliable category-wide answer. Start with the product's 10-digit HTS classification and Column 1 rate, then check China Section 301 coverage, exclusions, Section 232 treatment, the temporary Section 122 surcharge, and any AD/CVD order. Section 122 does not stack on the portion already subject to Section 232.

What is Section 122, and what happens when it expires on July 24?

The February 20 proclamation imposed a temporary 10% surcharge from February 24 through 12:01 a.m. EDT on July 24, 2026, unless suspended, modified, terminated earlier, or extended by Congress. An appeals court allowed collection to continue while litigation proceeds. Check current CBP instructions before timing an entry around the deadline.

Are US duties calculated on FOB or CIF value?

US Customs assesses duties on the FOB value (excluding international freight and insurance), unlike the EU which uses CIF. That's why freight only affects landed cost — not the duty itself — in this tool.

Is the $800 de minimis exemption still available?

No. The $800 de minimis exemption has been eliminated for all parcels. Direct-mail packages now pay duties too, which significantly impacts cross-border e-commerce direct shipping.

What are MPF and HMF?

The Merchandise Processing Fee is 0.3464% of customs value with a minimum and maximum per entry; the Harbor Maintenance Fee is 0.125%, ocean shipments only, no cap. Both are standard costs of a formal entry and are included automatically here.

How accurate are the results?

This tool estimates using typical rates per category, intended for quick planning and shipment decisions. Actual rates depend on the 10-digit HTS code, origin determination and CBP review, and exclude AD/CVD and exclusions. Consult a licensed customs broker for formal entries.
